Injection Sclerotherapy
Often used as an adjunct to laser therapy, injection sclerotherapy can be used to treat some varicose and nearly all spider veins. An extremely fine needle is used to inject the vein with a solution, which shrinks the vein. This is often done after endovenous ablation to improve the appearance of any remaining spider veins.
Some varicose veins which are too windy and tortuous to be treated by laser ablation can be treated with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. Occassionally, insurance may cover this with primary care physician referral and/or prior authorization.
Enlarged veins can cause a variety of symptoms, such as itching, burning and throbbing.
Even though these may cause symptoms, insurance carriers consider these a cosmetic issue and will not cover spider vein treatment. Treatment of spider veins can be a single or multi-step process depending on your endpoint. A compression stocking must be worn for 2-3 days after sclerotherapy and can be purchased through us. At Mass Vein Care, our sclerosant of choice is Sotradecol, a well-known, FDA-approved sclerotherapy drug.
